Description

We are Steele Law Corporation, a BC criminal defence firm led by Jerry Steele. From our Victoria office, and serving clients in Kelowna, Vancouver and communities across British Columbia, we defend people facing DUI charges and Immediate Roadside Prohibitions.

DUI and IRP defence

A drinking and driving allegation in BC can mean two separate fights. One is a criminal case in court, for impaired driving, over 80 or refusal. The other is an administrative IRP or prohibition that can take your licence and your vehicle within minutes of a roadside stop. We handle both, and we take on the cases that seem difficult, including drivers on prescription medication and seniors who have been unfairly caught by the roadside rules.

An IRP has a strict deadline: you have only 7 days to apply for a review. If you have been served with a prohibition, call us before the deadline passes. We will explain your options and what a review can achieve. For criminal impaired driving charges, we review the stop, the breath or drug demands and the testing process, and we take cases to trial when that is the right call.

Beyond driving offences, we defend domestic violence, sexual assault, drug, theft, weapons and assault charges.

Charged with impaired driving in Victoria and Kelowna? Key facts

From British Columbia DUI Lawyers: most impaired driving stops in BC begin with an Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) under the Motor Vehicle Act, and police can also lay Criminal Code charges. A FAIL reading or a refusal brings a 90-day driving prohibition, a 30-day vehicle impoundment, a $500 administrative penalty and a $250 licence reinstatement fee, and RoadSafetyBC may require the Responsible Driver Program or the Ignition Interlock Program. You have only 7 days to apply for a review, so speak with a lawyer right away. If you are also charged under the Criminal Code with impaired driving, over 80 or refusal, that court case runs separately from the IRP, and a conviction can bring a fine, a driving prohibition and a criminal record.
